Let’s talk about something that is really important, despite being something that we all need to make time for: mindfulness.

Yes, mindfulness. Taking time away from the chaos of the world in order to be present and engaged with the here and now. Now, if you’re like me and often get caught up in the everyday hustle and bustle, it can be hard to make sure you’re spending enough time living in the moment.

Five Small Things for Daily Mindfulness

1. Morning Breathing Exercises

First, take time in the morning to practice some simple breathing exercises. Just a few deep breaths will help you start the day in a more relaxed state of mind. Find a quiet space, close your eyes, and focus on your breath as it moves in and out of your body. Notice how it feels to fill your lungs with air and release it slowly. This simple practice can set a positive tone for the rest of your day.

2. Lunchtime Walks

Second, use your lunchtime to get away from your desk and go for a short walk outside. The fresh air will help you recharge your batteries and clear away any stress or worries for a few moments. As you walk, pay attention to the sights, sounds, and sensations around you. Notice the colors of the sky, the rustling of leaves in the wind, and the feeling of your feet touching the ground. Let yourself be fully present in the experience of walking.

3. Midday Meditation

Third, take a few moments to meditate, even if it’s just for five minutes. Find somewhere quiet and just focus on your breathing and being present in your body. Sit comfortably with your back straight and your feet flat on the ground. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose, letting your belly expand as you fill your lungs with air. Then exhale slowly through your mouth, letting go of any tension or stress. Repeat this process several times, allowing yourself to relax more deeply with each breath.

4. Mindful Eating

Fourth, instead of reaching for your phone when you have a few spare minutes, why not practice some mindful eating? Take your time to really appreciate the taste of your food instead of rushing through your meal. Notice the colors, textures, and flavors of each bite. Chew slowly and savor the experience of eating. Eating mindfully can help you feel more satisfied with your meals and prevent overeating.

5. Permission to Do Nothing

Lastly, give yourself permission to do nothing. Take some time off from all the activities you’ve planned and just sit or lie down for a bit and relax. Allow yourself to be still and quiet, without feeling the need to fill the silence with distractions. Use this time to simply be present with yourself and your surroundings. Let go of any expectations or obligations and give yourself the gift of rest and rejuvenation.

Once you give mindfulness a try, I’m sure you’ll be surprised at how much better it makes you feel. Mindfulness has been proven to increase happiness and reduce anxiety, so it’s definitely worth making an effort to be more present each day.
