4 Benefit of Backbends

So what are the benefits of practicing backbends? Here are some of the major reasons to incorporate backbends into your practice.

  1. Improves posture

We don’t even realize how rounded over we’ve become until we bring attention to our fundamental spinal alignment. As a result, we start to stand taller and improve our posture. There is a blue print to the best way the body should be aligned, stacking shoulders over hips, over ankles from top to bottom, and bottom to top. What pose helps? Savasana first and foremost to get a base line. Then practice bridge with or without a block under your sacrum to support longer time spent in the pose.

  1. Increase mobility of spine

We spend the majority of our day bending forward in one way or another – sitting, driving, texting, picking things up, even sleeping. Statistically they say up to 80% is rounded over. But our spines are meant to be mobile. They move in 6 directions: flexion, extension, lateral flexion (right and left), rotation (right and left). By practicing backbends, we can improve flexibility and balance the mobility of the spine. From bridge take an easy supine twist then turn over to your belly and practice belly down backbends like low cobra or locust variations. And every day do some cat/cow too.

  1. Relieve Shoulder Pain

During the day we all start to slowly slump forward at our desks and our shoulders round forward. Backbends stretch the front of your chest and help you to draw your shoulders back and shoulder blades together, counteracting the shoulder slump.

  1. Natural mood elevator and energizer

The action of opening your heart and stretching the whole front line of the body stimulates the nervous system, waking you up and improving your mood. It can be invigorating and that boost of energy can help to alleviate stress. 


Why and How do Backbends Work?

There are three sections of the spine

Lumbar – Thoracic – Cervical

Be careful: The lumbar and cervical spine are the most mobile while the thoracic spine is the least mobile. In a backbanding practice, we need to stabilize both the lumbar and cervical region in order to mobilize the upper back.

How to prepare:

  • Move your spine in all 6 different directions.
  • Do belly down backbends for the front of your shoulders and to stretch the front of your chest. Practice sphinx, locust with yoga mudra, low cobra pushups.
  • Don’t forget to open your quads and psoas. Backbends require strong and open quads and psoas.

I’m Not Sure I Want to Teach Yoga

I often hear people say “I’m not sure if I want to teach yoga,” when thinking about a yoga teacher training. My heart responds, we are ALL teachers.

Wisdom teachers abound everywhere you go. Each time you order a latte at your favorite coffee shop you are teaching by the example you set for those around you: how to be kind. When you park your car at the grocery store you are teaching others how to be gracious. When you share what you have you are teaching generosity.

We do not need to all teach #asana (yoga poses) post YTT but certainly investing in a program that opens your heart to who you really are is more than worthwhile.

Over the last 20 years of teaching and leading a Yoga School the best students are those that don’t have a meticulous post program action plan. Instead, they are focused on learning and experiencing their personal growth. Just as in a yoga class the goal is the practice rather than accomplishing a “pose.” In Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) allow your intention to be to show up as your real self and peal back the layers of all that stands in the way of living your most authentic life.

ALCHEMY OF YOGA: HOW TO LIVE AN INSPIRED LIFE

Yoga is about wholeness, health, and vital living. It is about a life inspired in body, mind, and spirit. Through movement, meditation, discussion, and journaling, we will explore the vast resources related to How to Live an INSPIRED Life by focusing on the last three niyamas or personal practices that comprise the Alchemy of Yoga. These are necessary for bringing about real, lasting change and cultivating inner happiness and spiritual bliss.

ALCHEMYOFYOGALOGO

Experience the alchemy of the five elements, the four directions, and the chakra system as an inner and outer map of transformation. These are archetypal and energetic maps that are as metaphorical as they are very real and embodied. Everything we see, taste, touch, feel, and do can be interpreted through the gateway of the elements, directions, and chakras.

We will learn how to tap into these sacred relationships and align ourselves with their alchemy in order to gain insight into healing our psyche, emotions, and well-being.

WHAT IS ALCHEMY OF YOGA?

Something magical and mystical happens when a group of high-intentioned individuals make the decision to gather together for two-hundred hours with the purpose of uplifting their lives and expanding consciousness into radical authenticity.

The result is something beyond words. It is, as best as I can explain it, the Alchemy of Yoga. The Yoga Sutras (Chapter 2, Verse 1) explains how the Alchemy of Yoga actually works:

“Tapas svadhaya ishvara pranidhana kriya yoga.”

This sutra is translated to explain that yoga helps us transform ourselves on three levels:

  1. Physical Alchemy – Tapas
  2. Mental Alchemy – Svadhaya
  3. Spiritual Alchemy – Ishvara Pranidhana

Physical Alchemy – Tapas: Ignites the changes we want to make in our lives. It is about the getting fired up and passionate. Literally it means heating the body through moving and breathing in the vinyasa.

Mental Alchemy – Svadhaya: While we are following the discipline of tapas and engaging in physical practice to help move our stuck energy we are watching ourselves. In yoga we study the self to learn about the self. Here the mental alchemy is through self-observation. We witness what is going on in our thoughts, what are we thinking. We tune in to our intuition to enhance clarity and harmony between what we think, say and do. We remember to remember who we really are. Through this, our ego softens from being I centered to seeing our interconnectedness to all things, people, nature, energies. We humbly realize our nature of union in this interweb.

Spiritual Alchemy – Ishvara Pranidhana: As we are doing and watching, we let go of the ego of judgment. We move beyond wanting life to be different and begin to feel the surrender that allows what is being offered to mix together. We practice ishvara pranidhana as we trust the universal intelligence that hugs us from all directions to know what it is doing. Once we find this trust, we begin to believe that beauty and goodness are within us flowing non-stop. We understand that there is no reason to stop this flow for its natural current is to align with the current of grace that is everywhere outside us. Beauty becomes our way of life. Happiness becomes our natural alchemy once again.

Map Your Intentions to Manifest

When you break down the process of what true intention really is, you will find a process that unfolds before you. By applying this process, you create your intention. With a well defined MAP of your intentions they become easier to MANIFEST. On my #yogaretreats & trainings I will help support you through this process in practical and loving ways.

1. Know your purpose (Vision/Dharma): Your reason behind your intention is purpose. Having a purpose infers a more determined path.
2. Design your intent: This means a specific, measurable (quantitative and qualitative), plan of action. What, when, why, where, how.
3. Improve your aim (GPS): By improving your aim, you add to your target effort directed toward attaining your intention. Remember it’s hard to make a bull’s eye if you don’t know where you’re aiming.
4. Include smaller items that will take little effort: manifesting smaller things actually creates a steady flow of energy and teaches us to appreciate the smaller goals as well.
5. Manifest your Intentions: The goal is the result of your #intention, put into action and attaining it by thought out effort and consistent focus.
