Learn about Kecak Fire Dance

Going to #kecak fire and trance performance tonight! Here’s who I ran into today. The king that stole Sita! #ogohogoh Jai Hanuman!

About KECAK
The impressive traditional Bali Kecak and fire dance is inspired by the epic of Ramayana. Learn about the history and culture of the island through dance performance. Normally music plays a vital role to accompany the dancers movements. But in the Kecak Dance, the music generated is from a combination of sounds by the 50-100 or more men sounding like “cak.” They sit in concentric circles, swaying, standing up, lying prone as the story develops. A person will act as a leader who gives the tone early, someone else acting as a suppressor in charge of high or low tone, someone else acting as a solo singer, and someone else will act as the mastermind behind all of that to deliver the story.

The story is a fragment from the #Ramayana, the Hindu epic which finds its expression in many forms, not only in dance, but also in painting and carving. Prince Rama, heir to the throne of the kingdom of Ayodya, and his wife Sita have been banished from the kingdom by King Dasarata as a result of trickery by Rama’s stepmother. The story begins with the arrival of Rama and Sita accompanied by Rama’s brother Laksmana in the forest of Dandaka.

The trio have been observed by the demon Rahwana, King of Alengka, who lusts after the beautiful Sita. Rahwana sends his prime minister Marica to try and isolate Sita so that Rahwana can kidnap her. Marica’s magical powers turn him into a golden deer and he enters the forest and when the Sita sees the golden deer she is so enchanted by it that she asks Rama to capture it for her. Rama chases after the deer leaving his brother Laksamana behind with strict instuction to protec Sita. When Sita thinks she hears a cry for help from Rama she forces Laksamana to go after Rama by accusing him of cowardice and he goes off to help Rama with great reluctance after drawing a magic circle on the ground and telling Sita the she should not under any circumstance step out side the circle.
Sita, left alone in the forest becomes an easy prey to the trickery of Rahwana who has disguised himself has an old priest and begs Sita for some food as he is cold and hungry. Sita falls for his trick, she steps outside the circle to give the old priest some food and rahwana grabs her and takes her to his palace. Once back in his palace in Alengka, Rahwana tries everything he can to seduce Sita without any luck.

In the palace of Alengka, Sita pours out her heart about her cruel fate to Rahwana’s niece Trijata, when Hanoman appears telling her that hi is Rama’s envoy and proving it by showing her Rama’s ring. Sita gives Hanoman a hairpin to show she is still alive and sand him back to Rama with a massage to come to her rescue.

In the meantime Rama and Laksamana accompanied by Tualen are wandering in the forest looking for Sita when Meganada, Rahwana’s son, appeares and engages Rama and Laksamana in Battle. Meganada uses his magic powers and shoots of an arrow which magically turns in to a dragon which overpowers Rama and Laksamana and they are trussed up in ropes.

The bird Garuda, King of all the bird, a good friend of King Dasarata, has observed trouble Rama is in from high up in the sky and comes to the rescue freeing the brothers from the ropes. Rama and Laksamana continue on their way to rescue Sita and are joined by Sugriwa, king of the monkeyes, and his monkey army.

This fragmen of the Ramayana come to an end with the bittle between Sugriwa and his Monkey Army and Meganada and his Demon Army which ends with the defeat of Meganada.

Happy New Year Nyepi in Bali

I love how every culture has its own way of celebrating the new year. ❤️Nyepi Day in #Bali is a New Year celebration unlike anywhere else on the planet. Bali’s celebrates the Saka New Year as the Bali Day of Silence.
.
The unique day of silence marks the turn of the Saka calendar of western Indian origin, one among the many calendars assimilated by Indonesia’s diverse cultures, and among two jointly used in Bali. The Saka is 78 years behind the Gregorian calendar, and follows a lunar sequence. Nyepi follows after a new moon.
.
Local communities known as ‘banjar’ build bamboo and papier-mâché effigies called ogoh-ogoh, built throughout the weeks before new year. Every Balinese household starts the evening with blessings at the family temple and continues with a ritual called the pengrupukan where each member participates in ‘chasing away’ malevolent forces, known as bhuta kala, from their compounds – hitting pots and pans or any other loud instruments. These ‘spirits’ are later manifested as the ogoh-ogoh to be paraded in the streets.
.
However on Nyepi Day, complete calm enshrouds the island. The Balinese Hindus follow a ritual called the Catur Brata Penyepian, roughly the ‘Four Nyepi Prohibitions’. These include amati geni or ‘no fire’, amati lelungan or ‘no travel’, amati karya ‘no activity’, and amati lelanguan ‘no entertainment’. Some consider it a time for total relaxation and contemplation, for others, a chance for Mother Nature to ‘reboot’ herself after 364 days of human pestering. No lights are turned on at night – total darkness and seclusion goes along with this new moon island-wide, from 06:00 to 06:00.
.
The day after Nyepi, referred to as ‘Ngembak Geni’

There is a #Sanskrit word, lila, which means divine play, the play of creation, destruction, and re-creation, the folding and unfolding of the cosmos. #Lila, free and deep, is both the delight and enjoyment of this moment, and the #play of consciousness experiencing itself through our human experience.

Lila can also mean love.

I am profoundly touched and inspired by what is possible when you bring together a high vibe tribe to do the work of spirit, manifesting their best lives, and elevating the world while having a super FUN time. Jai Ma~

Our Dharma is to Love

The truth is I want to feel like this everyday of 2017.
.
Upon arriving to #Bali I feel loved even at the airport at #Denpasar 💙❤️ And not just once but every single time I don’t want to leave the embrace I feel there.
.
And while I’m sharing truth, I’ve changed my return ticket all but once in order to stay longer 😊
.
Most of all I want us all to feel embraced by love no matter where we live or what else happens in 2017. Let #love be the goal of all other goals.

Remember in part we ALL share the same #dharma.
Our dharma is to love.

What Does It Mean to be Devoted?

_DSC1966Every year on our Bali Yoga Retreat we bring our tribe to an epic Kecak performance which depicts the Ramayana, an epic Sanskrit poem (and the most well-known portrayal of Hanuman.) It is the telling of the story of Rama including his friendship with Hanuman his devoted friend, protector, and warrior.

His devotion to his best friend Rama is unmatched.

For your self-reflection: Journaling prompts

What does it mean to you be devoted?

Does devotion have to be spiritual?

What does it truly mean to be devoted, in a spiritual sense?

I looked up synonyms for devotion and it says dedication, care, commitment, and enthusiasm. Did those themes come across for you?

What in your life is worth your devotion (dedication, commitment)?

What do you really care about so much that you will stick with it.

What is the relationship between devotion and love?

What in your life is worth giving yourself to completely?

Where has your devotion been unappreciated?

Where have you received total devotion from another?

The Alchemy of Devotion is a form of potent energy. There is something so infinitely valuable about what we give our hearts to. Today in your life, are you ready to step into the current of grace with both feet? If your heart says this is the right situation then move beyond what is holding you back. Devote yourself completely for a day, a week, a year, and a lifetime. Make this your most important sadhana.

In your practice on the mat tomorrow try making every pose an act of devotion. Notice the difference in tonality and echo of what returns to you.

Love yourself, love your day, love your life! Silvia

PS – Hanumanasana, the splits is named for Hanuman.
The story goes that Hanuman is the son of Anjana and Vayu (wind god). He has various powers one of which is to make himself BIG (mahima).
