Why I Choose Saint Catherine of Siena

My heart felt deep resonance in Siena from the first visit. I felt connected to something I already knew. It is truly one of my all time favorite places in #Tuscany. Only later would I piece it together as to perhaps why I felt this.

I remember in CCD for confirmation I was asked to pick a name Saint, so I choose Saint Catherine who was born in #Siena, Italy on March 25, 1347. She was the 25th child born to her mother. Catherine herself was a twin, but her sister did not survive infancy. Her mother was 40 when she was born.

She wasn’t a nun, she instead served the poor and sick and lived in the world. She is best known for serving tirelessly to petition for #peace during a politically unstable time. She is also credited with composing over 400 letters, her Dialogue, which is her definitive work, and her prayers. These works are so influential that St. Catherine would later be declared a Doctor of the Church. She is one of the most influential saints in the Church.
.
I love this feeling of exploring new places, but also of returning to places I love so much like Siena. It is a coming home.

Peace Mantra

The dream that won’t let me fall back asleep in this lifetime is to #teachpeace

So today try a reciting a peace #mantra like

“Om Mani Padme Hum”

Or

Shanti shanti shanti

Peace peace peace

Repeat 108 times or for 10-15 minutes

According to Harvard medical school, Of the many different meditation techniques being taught today, mantra meditation is one of the most highly effective in terms of increasing happiness, well being and health. And of the highly effective meditation techniques, mantra meditation is by far the easiest to learn and practice.

You learn to meditate by meditating. The silence and stillness you experience in meditation and the increased happiness and diminished stress you experience outside meditation are so attractive and welcomed that you naturally teach yourself how to go deeper into that silence and stillness each time you meditate.

To meditate you sit comfortably and quietly with your eyes closed and effortlessly and silently inside repeat a word or a short phrase called a mantra. Your mantra can be any word, sound, prayer or short phrase you like that is in your native language.

Continue repeating your mantra in that same simple, effortless way for 10-30 minutes. That repetition may not be a clear pronunciation of your mantra but instead may be just a faint idea of it.  As you continue thinking your mantra, thoughts and distractions will come, and that’s fine; having thoughts during meditation is natural. When thoughts and distractions do come just gently return to thinking your mantra in the same simple, effortless way as thoughts come. Choose the amount of time you meditate based on what suits you.

It’s important to not strain to make the mantra come, but rather to relax into effortlessness and let the mantra come in the same simple, effortless way as thoughts come. If you strain to make the mantra come that can create stress that tires you.

Avoid looking for experiences or signs of progress or failure with your meditation because that hinders meditation. Just be confident that after some time you will start to notice the benefits of meditating during your day. You may be happier, feeling more at ease and calmer, and getting along better with others. You may start noticing these benefits soon, or it may take up to six months of meditating regularly before you start to notice these benefits. So just get in the habit of meditating regularly and then stick with it. And be patient with yourself – if you stop meditating for a day or two, just go back and start meditating again.

Keep Giving

When I look at what’s going on in the world I promise to wake up and offer part of the benefits of my morning meditation outward. It has me engaging with what Generosity means & how to practice it today when so much is being taken away or minimized. It keeps me in the energy of of #abundance. One of my favorite stories about the value of generosity is called Stone Soup.
“There are many variations on the story of stone soup, but they all involve a traveler coming into a town beset by famine. The inhabitants try to discourage the traveler from staying, fearing he wants them to give him food. They tell him in no uncertain terms that there’s no food anywhere to be found. The traveler explains that he doesn’t need any food and that, in fact, he was planning to make a soup to share with all of them. The villagers watch suspiciously as he builds a fire and fills an enormous pot with water. With great ceremony, he pulls a stone from a bag, dropping the stone into the pot of water. He sniffs the brew extravagantly and exclaims how delicious stone soup is. As the villagers begin to show interest, he mentions how good the soup would be with just a little cabbage in it. A villager brings out a cabbage to share. This episode repeats itself until the soup has cabbage, carrots, onions, and beets, indeed, a substantial soup that feeds everyone in the village.”
This story teaches us that the value of sharing is especially important when we feel like what we have is limited thereby causing us to constrict, hoard or withdraw. The example of food is used but this can also apply to when we stop sharing acceptance, respect for the earth, equal rights or put conditions on giving love or anytime we hold back. The traveler represents the potential within each of us to inspire those around us to be more generous.
No matter what happens what we can control is our own thoughts and actions. Keep giving. Stay generous. #BeKind #TeachPeace
Please.
Thank you.
I love you. And you. And you. And you. And you. And you. And you.

How to Invoke Sacred Space

I’m often asked about what words I say when I call to the #fourdirections to open or close sacred space. Here is one version of Invocation and thru the years of internal study as well as learning from my Shamanism teachers I speak my own voice too.

To the winds of the South
Thank you for the healing light you bring to us
For helping us to shed the deadness of our past the way a snake sheds skin, all at once
Thank you for teaching us the Beauty Way.

To the winds of the West
Mother Sister Jaguar
Thank you for protecting our medicine space
We embrace your wisdom of teaching us the ways
of peace, impeccability, and equanimity.

To the winds of the North
Hummingbird, dear Grandmothers and Grandfathers, Ancient Ones
Thank you for sharing this space with us
We listen for your whispers to us in the wind and to the sacred space within our hearts
Guide us with your grace.

To the winds of the East
Great Eagle, Condor
Thank you for taking us upon your wings to our highest path of destiny
Thank you for Showing us the holy mountains and reminding us to envision our lives from this place.

Mother Earth
Pachamama
We give you thanks, as one of your children, for holding us so sweetly in your womb of love and life as we heal all of our stories, our shadows, our fears.

Father Sun, Grandmother Moon
Star Nations – Star Brothers and Sisters
Great Spirit
You who are known by a thousand names
The unnamable, the nameless one
You who are unknown, yet not unknowable
Thank you for bringing us together
And allowing us to sing the song of Life, one more day.

Learn to Teach Peace

Your Mission if you choose to accept it is to TEACH PEACE.

The Alchemy of Yoga Mission of TEACH PEACE is being demanded by the world today more than ever before. Finally after almost 20 years Peace is trending.

My dharma is to INSPIRE your DESIRE to Teach Peace.

We cannot just wish for change.

We cannot just wish for peace.

We have to take action.

It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it. -Eleanor Roosevelt

The time is now to cultivate peace within ourselves so we may teach peace to the world by our example. In the words of Thich Nhat Hanh,  “You are not an observer, you are a participant.” Stop waiting for the world to change. Instead lead this (r)evolution by prioritizing peace in your home, your community and ultimately in the world. Start now. Please don’t wait.

“Each moment is a chance for us to make peace with the world, to make peace possible for the world, to make happiness possible for the world.”  – Thich Nhat Hanh, Teachings on Love

Together we can awaken the hearts of others to join us in a Happiness Revolution!
